On this day in 1876, Colorado becomes the 38th state of the Union when President Ulysses S. Grant signs a proclamation of statehood.
First, here is the Preamble of the Constitution of Colorado:
“We, the people of Colorado, with profound reverence for the Supreme Ruler of the Universe, in order to form a more independent and perfect government; establish justice; insure tranquillity; provide for the common defense; promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this constitution for the “State of Colorado”.”
State Seal
Next, near the top of the State Seal of you’ll see “the eye of God” in a triangle. This is similar to the reverse of the Great Seal of the United Staes. Finally, towards the bottom is the state motto, “Nil Sine Numine”, Latin words meaning “Nothing without the Deity,” or “Nothing Without Providence.”
Now, that’s a motto; for all time, for all nations, for all people.
