Description
Proclaim LIBERTY.
Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants thereof. LEV. XXV VS X.
This verse of Scripture is the first of two lines of text around the top of the Liberty Bell, and quotes Leviticus 25:10.
The Bell, cast in 1753, was originally housed in what we now call Independence Hall. That history inspires Our latest t-shirt, “brick red” in color with ink colors inspired by the Hall’s bell tower, and the original color of the Liberty Bell.
When Jesus began his ministry he quoted Isaiah 61 when he said “He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives… .”
“[T]he propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained; and since the preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government are justly considered, perhaps, as deeply, as finally, staked on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.”
– George Washington, from his first Inaugural Address in 1789
