Description
In God We Trust.
It’s a main theme of the Holy Bible, and it’s the official national motto of the United States of America (as well as the state of Florida).
Some will groan that it didn’t become the official motto until 1956, in response to the rise of Communism. That may be true, but Bible aside, a through line of usage can be drawn back to at least January 1748, when it appeared on one of the “Devices and Mottoes painted on some of the Silk Colours of the Regiments of Associators, in and near Philadelphia” designed by none other than Benjamin Franklin.
We’ve borrowed the Motto font from the American currency (where it ought to be informing our expenditures), and spliced it with the immediately recognizable “We” from the “We the People” which opens our Constitution, the longest standing constitution in world history.
Perhaps frequent recurrence to our motto, both nationally and individually, might help ensure that it remains as such.
