On this day in 1980, the U.S. hockey team, made up of college players and regarded as significant underdogs, defeats the four-time defending gold-medal winning Soviet team at the XIII Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York by a final score of 4-3, making it one of the most dramatic upsets in Olympic history.

This “Miracle on Ice” was also seen as an ideological victory in the Cold War.

Two days later, the Americans defeated Finland 4-2 to win hockey gold.
